OUR INGREDIENTS
OILS AND BUTTERS
For all our shampoo and wash bars, we use a base of virgin olive oil, coconut oil, hempseed oil and castor - we reckon these make the perfect gentle cleansing formula - and for our all-in-one balms, we use shea butter, cocoa butter, hempseed oil and rice bran wax, for the best moisturising and protecting balance; from these we add other natural oils and powders (depending on use) to make up our individual recipes; examples of these are jojoba, which we use for balance and shine, and rosehip for it's amazing regenerative properties.
For scenting we use only 100% pure and natural essential oils, specially chosen both for their amazing aromas and incredible therapeutic properties; these oils make for a light 'overtone' type of fragrance - as opposed to the knock-you-over overwhelming scent of fragrance you get from synthetic oils! - that uplifts without lingering.
POWDERS
The plant powders we use in our hair rinse and in some of our bars are just 100% plant with nothing added - aloe vera and marshmallow for conditioning and shine, lemon peel and horsetail for strengthening, growth and clarification. We also use citric acid powder - which although obtained in laboratory conditions is also naturally derived and fully biodegradable - as a conditioner for hair and as a great antioxidant. Lastly, we use powdered kaolin clay, mined right here in Cornwall, which has been used in cosmetics for centuries for its amazing absorbent detoxifying properties.
SODIUM HYDROXIDE
Yes sodium hydroxide (NaOH, or Lye, as it's often known) is used in the making of our shampoo and wash bars - all traditional soap is made with it, and has been for generations - but the finished bar has absolutely Zero lye remaining and is completely harmless - A process called saponification (basically a reaction between the sodium hydroxide and the oils) turns all the lye to soap, and in fact we use more oil than is needed to convert the lye to soap in a process called 'superfatting' (how we make our bars so conditioning and moisturising) so there really is no chance of any residual NaOH getting left in the bar. Just pure, natural organic soap! 🌱💚
